Every therapeutic approach has its distinctive strengths and limitations, so knowing how to judiciously combine different approaches can greatly increase our range and clinical effectiveness. Through lecture, videos and demonstrations, this workshop will demonstrate how to integrate Imago Relationship Therapy with Emotional Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to enhance your skills and understanding in couples work.
You’ll learn how to use Imago’s dialogue, mirroring, and validation techniques to help partners avoid shame, blame and criticism as they shift from antagonism to openness and empathy. We’ll explore the power of the Imago Intentional Dialogue, as well as its limitations, with a special focus on how to be helpful with those troubled couples who require a level of intervention that goes beyond dialogue.
We’ll then show how EFT can equip therapists to play a more active role to move couples past obstacles to embracing their most vulnerable emotions and expressing their deepest needs. We’ll focus on how EFT enables therapists to use themselves to soften couples power struggles, navigate through difficult emotional territory, and establish a deeper sense of felt connection.
You’ll explore a range of therapeutic skills that will extend your range as a therapist, including your capacity to stay attuned to the flow of emotions, deepen them and use your own emotional responses to help your clients experience new possibilities for connection. You’ll learn a skill set for helping clients access and regulate emotion emphasizing the three S’s—speaking slowly, softly and simply—and leave with powerful tools to set up enactments of primary emotions that encourage partners to reconnect and rebuild their bonds.
You’ll come away from this intensive, highly practical, two-day learning experience with a range of potent clinical tools and a fuller, more reliable road map, grounded in research and Attachment Theory, for your couples work.
Jette Simon, Lic., is both a Senior Clinical Instructor for Imago International, a certified EFT therapist, and a certified supervisor for EFT. She’s the author of Imago: The Therapy of Love.
